My Take: Toni Braxton, Abortion, and Autism

My Take: Toni Braxton, Abortion, and Autism

Legendary singer and performer Toni Braxton recently started a firestorm within the autism community while promoting her memoirs. Toni revealed that when her son, Diezel was diagnosed with autism she believed that it was a punishment from God because she had an abortion years ago.

Yes Toni’s words are alarming to me as a parent of a child with autism and as a Christian. However, I have decided not to participate in what has become a witch hunt of the singer. I know many parents who had irrational thoughts when their child was diagnosed with autism. No I did not think that my son’s diagnosis was punishment from God but I did wonder if I did something during my pregnancy to cause his diagnosis. I did not know any better back then. I know better now.

Instead of embarking on a celebrity witch hunt, I prefer to be outraged about the families who are going through tough times without any support. Don’t get me wrong, I did a double take when I read what Toni said. I just don’t have the emotional strength to get worked up about it any more. If she still feels that way, then that is between her, her son, and God.

I am becoming weary of the collective outrage of social media when it comes to what celebrities and public figures say. (I am guilty of it also.)  Toni is out there selling her books and making her money. Her son probably gets the top therapies and interventions. Let us worry about our own kids. We know we love them. Toni loves her son, too. We know they are not a punishment from God. Yes she is a celebrity and her words go far but maybe we play a part in that happening. Our collective outrage carries her words to a place they would not have gone without our efforts. I think it is time for us to move on.

Let me know your thoughts. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Miz Kp

Wow, I am and always have been a fan of Toni Braxton, I have known of her sons Autism diagnosis. When my son received his diagnosis I felt guilty and wondered what was it that I may have done wrong, and if there was anything that u could have done to prevent it. Sometimes I still feel this way. I pray continuously and look towards educating myself. Although she is a celebrity who may have/ had the same questions and doubts that many of us may have had in the past, I prefer real life experiences and advice from mothers like myself who can relate to my situation. This why I appreciate your blog, and I thank you Miz Kp for bringing awareness, your advice ,and sharing your real life experiences!

Upon reading this , I realize that all parents can have a wide array of thoughts and opinions, and many times they feel they are justified in their thoughts and opinions. I will say this that Toni is brave in mentioning that autism diagnosis was a punishment from God. I dont necessarily agree with what she says in that context, but I can see why she says it. I hope Toni and others can understand that parenting for a special needs child is NOT something to be ashamed of (but I m pretty sure Toni knows that). Despite the diagnoses, we are raising heroes, geniuses and winners!

Let me start off by saying, I have not read Toni Braxton’s book. With that said, I do not judge her because she is writing what she felt when she was told of her child’s diagnosis. I agree with Dad of Angel in saying that Toni was brave in mentioning how she felt about the diagnosis being a punishment from God. From my own experience, I myself questioned God and asked what did I do wrong. My son is my blessing and although not always easy, I would not change him for anything in the world. I am pretty sure Toni feels the same. We should all remember not to judge how someone feels or felt at such an emotional and critical moment in her life. Feelings are subjective and no one person is going to feel or react the same to anything.

I agree Sylvia. That is why I made it a point not to get caught up in a witch hunt of Toni.
